What Wegovy is

Wegovy is Novo Nordisk's brand of semaglutide approved for chronic weight management (and related labeled uses) rather than as a type 2 diabetes primary indication. The injection is a once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. In 2025 the FDA also approved Wegovy tablets, an oral once-daily presentation for specified adult indications. Injection and tablets share a boxed warning and many class risks, but they have different strengths, titration calendars, and administration rules.

Labeled indications and who was studied

Wegovy injection is indicated, with diet and activity, to reduce excess body weight and keep weight off long term in adults with obesity (BMI of 30 or higher) or overweight (BMI of 27 or higher) plus at least one weight-related comorbid condition. The pediatric indication covers patients 12 years and older whose BMI is in the labeled percentile range. It is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, or non-fatal stroke in adults who already have cardiovascular disease and have obesity or overweight.

The current U.S. label also describes use in noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis in adults, at specified maintenance doses. Indications change when the FDA updates the label. Anyone considering treatment should use the latest prescribing information, not a blog summary.

STEP 1 enrolled adults with overweight or obesity without diabetes and compared 2.4 mg weekly semaglutide with placebo for 68 weeks. SELECT enrolled more than 17,000 adults aged 45 years or older with preexisting cardiovascular disease and BMI of 27 or higher, without diabetes, and found a reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events with semaglutide 2.4 mg versus placebo. Those trials define much of what clinicians mean when they say Wegovy was 'studied for weight and heart outcomes.' They still do not predict one person's result.

How Wegovy injection is taken

The injection is given subcutaneously once weekly, same day each week, any time of day, with or without meals, in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Devices include single-dose pens and, in some presentations, syringes or a multi-dose FlexTouch pen that delivers 2.4 mg doses. Devices must not be shared.

Titration exists to reduce gastrointestinal adverse reactions. The labeled adult and adolescent injection schedule starts at 0.25 mg weekly for weeks 1-4, then 0.5 mg (weeks 5-8), 1 mg (weeks 9-12), and 1.7 mg (weeks 13-16). From week 17 onward, maintenance is chosen from the indication-specific options on the label. If a step is not tolerated, clinicians may delay escalation by four weeks.

For adult weight reduction, maintenance is 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg weekly (2.4 mg recommended). For adult cardiovascular risk reduction, the same two weekly options appear, with 2.4 mg recommended. After at least four weeks on 2.4 mg, the current label allows increasing to a maximum of 7.2 mg weekly in adults when additional weight reduction is clinically indicated and the 2.4 mg dose is tolerated. That higher dose is not a do-it-yourself jump. Pediatric maintenance is 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg weekly, not the 7.2 mg adult option.

Wegovy tablets versus Ozempic - different products

Wegovy tablets are swallowed whole once daily in the morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of water, then the person waits at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking other liquids, or taking other oral medicines. Labeled tablet strengths are 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg, and 25 mg, with 25 mg as the usual adult maintenance dose. Ozempic is weekly semaglutide approved for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk in diabetes with established CVD, and kidney outcomes in diabetes with CKD. It is not interchangeable with Wegovy by brand name even though both contain semaglutide. Doses, devices, and indications differ. A clinician who changes products is making a new prescribing decision, not filling a generic substitution.

Risks, monitoring, and when to seek care

The boxed warning covers rodent thyroid C-cell tumors and the unknown human relevance. Wegovy is contraindicated with personal or family history of MTC or with MEN 2. Counsel patients about a lump in the neck, dysphagia, dyspnea, or hoarseness.

Common adverse reactions include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, fatigue, dyspepsia, dizziness, abdominal distension, belching, hypoglycemia in people with type 2 diabetes, flatulence, gastroenteritis, gastroesophageal reflux, and nasopharyngitis, depending on the trial program. Serious labeled risks include acute pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, acute kidney injury from dehydration, severe gastrointestinal reactions (not recommended in severe gastroparesis), hypersensitivity, and pulmonary aspiration during general anesthesia or deep sedation.

Wegovy can harm an unborn baby. The injection label instructs discontinuation if pregnancy is recognized and, because of the long washout, typically well before a planned pregnancy. Discuss breastfeeding with a clinician; there is a dedicated article on GLP-1 medicines while breastfeeding. Never start, stop, or 'stack' doses from social media. Prescription status and how this relates to Beema Health

Wegovy is prescription-only. There is no legitimate 'buy Wegovy online' checkout that skips a licensed clinician. Supply, savings cards, and pharmacy networks are handled by Novo Nordisk and dispensing pharmacies, not by this educational page.
